Workout Recovery

Don’t forget one of the most vital parts of a good exercise routine: recovery time!

Everyone knows that great sore feeling you get the day after a workout—that feeling that makes you say, “Wow I really worked hard.” Either that or, “Wow, I’m never doing that again.” A lot of people don’t want to work out again until that soreness goes away, but you don’t have to put off another good workout just because of a little soreness. On the other hand, if you ignore soreness and just plow ahead, it can turn into pain and injuries. And, if you never give your muscles time to recover you will be more prone to injury and can overwork them. So what is the right balance? Here are a few tips to help speed up muscle recovery and help you stay moving while not injuring yourself. Try some of these tips and your muscles will thank you and …

Weekend Planner: Fit and Fun Outdoors

It’s that time of year again to gear up for some great, fun outdoor activities that will keep you moving.

Somehow it is so much easy to be physically active when it is warm and sunny out. Summer is the time to get healthy and fit outdoors, and there are many avenues to do so. Try Golf! Lake Ridge Park has a beautiful, non-stressful, nine-hole, par-3 course that is perfect for a leisurely couple hours and much less expensive than a full course. You can get some sun, a nice walk, and a fun game at the same time. Check out the new skate park at Veterans Memorial Regional Park. Designed for skateboarding and inline skating, it is a great way to burn energy, practice some skills, and have fun outdoors. It is non-supervised and pads and helmets are required. Go biking or trail hiking on some of the gorgeous paths in the area. Prince William Forest …

Senior Fitness Testing at Chinn Wednesday

Chinn is holding its 8th annual fitness testing for people 60+ years young! Compare your fitness level to the national standards and set a standard to beat next year.

If you are 60+ years young, Chinn Aquatics and Fitness Center is offering a functional fitness test this Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. to help you find out where you are fitness-wise and set goals for years to come. The 90-minute session will include a group warm-up so you are ready to perform your best and then there will be six stations to test each lower body strength, upper body strength, aerobic endurance, lower body flexibility, upper body flexibility, and agility/balance. Rather than an invasive body fat calculation, these tests will help you see functional areas that you are strong and areas to improve. For example, to test lower body strength participants will perform a chair stand test; a step test will be used to analyze aerobic …

Setting Goals … like a Spartan?

What can motivate you to get fit this summer?

Too often we have too vague of goals. “I want to get fit this year,” or “I’m going to run more,” are the types of goals I often hear that are sure to fail because they are not specific enough. If, on the other hand, you say, “I’m going to walk/run for at least 30 minutes four times a week” that is a goal you might actually meet. Or “I’m going to not eat or drink sugar on weekdays from now through June.” What makes a good goal? First off, it has to be specific. Second, it has to be realistic. And third, at least in my book, it has to be achievable but still challenging. It’s probably not realistic to say, “I’m going to lose 100 pounds this summer,” but it is also not necessarily helpful to go to the other side and merely shoot for, say, …

C.S.I. Workouts

Want a great go-your-level class that incorporates cardio, strength, stretch, balance, and dance?

C.S.I. at Woodbridge Sport & Health Club is less intimidating than its acronym would make it sound. The name stands for “Cardio Strength Intervals” and this class incorporates a little of everything to deliver a well-rounded strength and cardio workout. There were Zumba moves, step moves, kickboxing moves, as well as your basic strength training with weights and some core work, all blended together to give you a full-body cardio, strength, balance, endurance and stretch workout. We started out with a Zumba styled warm-up, which transitioned into weighted squats, shoulder raises and bicep curls. Another transition brought us to classic step moves that could be done on the floor or with a raised stair: basic steps, knee raises, and later …
