Gar-Field Volleyball Coach Grades First-Year Efforts

Wilson hoping to return next year

For first year volleyball coach Kelli Wilson the task of coaching the Gar-Field varsity team unexpectedly fell in her lap. A week before August tryouts new Gar-Field Athletic Director Michael Payne approached Wilson, who he knew and trusted, and asked if she was up for the challenge. Wilson, who was hesitant at first, now looks back and knows that she made the right choice, and that her life has become more fulfilled as a result. “I became more aware of how to deal with personal situations not just volleyball situations,” said Wilson. “My main goal was to give the girls a positive experience and get them to learn something beyond volleyball. It's about life and how to be a better person. Each week I would mentally ask myself 'did I do 100 …

Wilson Versus Wilson Part Deux: Deserving Of A Tie-Breaker

Match to decide which team makes district tournament will be played tonight

All good sports rivalries have a level of drama that extends beyond the scoreboard; the debate over which team has the best fans is a classic, as well as the drama surrounding family members competing against each other, and usually there is history between the two teams. By that definition it is now official: Gar-Field versus Hylton volleyball is a true rivalry that deserves to be announced over the loud speakers in school, that deserves the attendance of the entire student body, and that deserves coverage on the front page of the local papers. The hint of a rivalry in the making appeared earlier this month when sister-in-laws Kelli Wilson of Gar-Field and Lauren Wilson of Hylton coached against each other for the first time. In that …

Gar-Field Wins Homecoming Game With Balanced Offensive Attack

Quarterback Ryan Mason voted Homecoming King.

In a 36-14 win over Potomac on Friday, Gar-Field's football team displayed the type of balanced attack that it will take to move past the first round of the regional tournament. Quarterback Ryan Mason threw three touchdowns, all in the first quarter, one of which was a third-down, 61-yard strike to LaRon Hinton, who was wide open down the left sideline. David Bailey scored the other two touchdowns, one for 17 yards and the other for 50 yards. Mason finished the game completing 8-of-11 passes for 182 yards. Shakeem Copeland contributed two touchdowns on the ground in the fourth quarter, one for 30 yards and the other for 25 yards. He rushed 20 times for 104 yards. Copeland also had two catches for 20 yards. Jordan miles was productive from …

Forest Park Loses Homecoming Game To Gar-Field

Indians remain ranked fifth in Cardinal District

Gar-Field defeated Forest Park Friday 15-7, in a game littered with penalties that in the end had both coaches rather upset with their team. The loss moved the Bruins down to third place in the Cardinal District and the Indians remain ranked fifth. “I'm a little perturbed, I don't really have much to say,” said Gar-Field coach Thomas Gryder. “It was not a very good performance, but it's a win. We have to get back on track with what we're doing.” The Indians' first possession fell victim to a false start, a fumbled sack and then a three-and-out punt, but Forest Park gave the ball right back to Gar-Field after quarterback Calvin Michie fumbled on his second play. The Indians then executed nine straight running plays behind the efforts of …

Indians' Defense Fails To Contain McMillian

Gar-Field loses to Hylton, 34-21

Heading into the game against Hylton Friday, Gar-Field knew that the key to winning would be defense, specifically the containment of the Bulldogs' sophomore quarterback and leading rusher, Travon McMillian. But it was Hylton's defense that drew first blood, and when the final whistled was blown, handed the Indians their second loss of the season. “I think that if they could have stopped some of the big plays, the game would've been a lot closer,” said New York Giants linebacker Clint Sintim, who is a Gar-Field alumnus and was in attendance. “We [Gar-Field] started off slow, but you could tell that when they started to feel more comfortable, they started to play much better.” The Indians were able to hold Hylton to only four plays and a …

Gar-Field Defeats Woodbridge In Great American Rivalry, 14-10

Shakeem Copeland named MVP

Last year when Gar-Field and Woodbridge met on the gridiron the result was a six-overtime battle that ended with Shakeem Copeland getting stuffed at the line of scrimmage on fourth and goal, giving the Vikings the win. However, Friday, when Indians head coach Thomas Gryder called the exact same play, the result was a 31-yard touchdown run which gave Gar-Field the lead four minutes into the third quarter, and eventually became the game winning play. “I saw the smile on his face when we came to the sideline after scoring,” said Gryder. According to Gryder, the Indians didn't feel that they needed to get revenge for their loss to Woodbridge last season, but instead, there was an emphasized focus on finishing Fridays game strong. For Gar-Field…

Size Not A Hindrance For Gar-Field Volleyball

Season record now 2-2

Gar-Field's volleyball team may very well be the shortest group in the Cardinal District this season, however, in a game such as volleyball in which size does matter, the Indians are determined to prove to opponents that they are not to be underestimated. With a record of 2-2 thus far, Gar-Field is forcing teams to take notice. “You're going to see that all season; we have no height on our team,” said first year head coach Kelli Wilson. “Our tallest girl on the team is our middle blocker [Day'ona Bowden] and she's out with an ankle injury. Our whole team is young, we only have three returning varsity players, so it's been a difficult and challenging ride.” Because Gar-Field lacks tall players, they rarely have strong kill shots, which …
