A 17-year-old Woodbridge teen has been charged with strangulation after Prince William County police investigated a reported assault at Woodbridge Senior High School Wednesday. Police responded to the school at 9:30 a.m. According to police reports, an investigation revealed that a 15-year-old Woodbridge male was "in a restroom within the school along with a group of others students, including the accused, a known acquaintance." "During the encounter, the accused became upset and placed his arm around the neck of the victim," police reports state. The number of criminal arrests increased slightly.
The rate of violent crimes in the county fell by 20.7 percent in 2011, and the overall crime rate also declined, Prince William County Chief of Police Charlie Deane reported today. "The rate of crime in all categories is down," he said. In 15 years, the county's population has increased from nearly 265,000 to over 409,000, but the crime rate per 1000 residents has dropped from about 32 in 1997 to about 17.5 in 2011. With three murders last year, murder was down by 66.6 percent, from nine murders in 2010. The highest number of murders in the county in recent years was 16 in 2006. A slight decrease has resulted in fewer murders, rapes, robberies, burglaries and motor vehicle thefts.
The overall crime rate for Prince William County in 2010 has slightly declined. Chief of Police Charlie T. Deane said that in 2009; there was a rate of 19.5 crimes per 1,000 residents in the county. For last year, that measurement is slightly lower, at 19.2 crimes per one thousand residents. Deane said the overall number of reported property crimes rose less than one percent while the number of reported violent crime fell by just over five percent. In total, murder, rape, robbery, burglary and motor vehicle theft decreased while aggravated assault and larceny saw small increases. It seems to me crime is on the rise in the county. The police need to spend more time fighing crime instead of spending so much time on Godwin Drive giving out speeding tickets.the speed limint is 25 and should be 35.I know the county needs more revenue but this isn't the road they should be spending a lot of time on.there are only 3 homes where they are seting up radar.again spend more time …   more ›
