A tornado watch is in effect through 10 p.m. tonight for Prince William County, City of Manassas, and Manassas Park, according to a National Weather Service alert. The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a risk of "severe thunderstorms" Friday afternoon and evening from eastern Georgia and the Carolinas northward across Virginia and Maryland and into southern Pennsylvania. The watch is also in effect for Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria and Loudoun counties, among other areas of the state. "The main threat is damaging wind, though a few supercell thunderstorms, capable of producing tornadoes, are possible," the organization said on its website. Original Post: A wide swath of Virginia, including Fredericksburg, is under a tornado watch until 7 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. "The ingredients may be there for a tornado," said meterologist Kevin Witt of the National Weather Service's Sterling office. The National Weather Service is forecasting that severe storms will move through the Fredericksburg between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. today. Warm spring temperatures have been linked with an uptick in severe weather patterns such as tornadoes, thunderstorms, and hail.
The mild spring weather in Northern Virginia and throughout much of the United States could bring even more severe weather, Accuweather reports. Temperatures are expected to stay in the 70s this week in the Woodbridge area, with scattered thunderstorms this afternoon. The last year with such widespread warm temperatures was 2004, a year that also boasted a record 1817 tornadoes striking the U.S. In 2011, almost 1700 tornadoes hit the U.S., making it the fourth deadliest year for tornadoes. Two weeks ago, tornadoes struck the Midwest and South with deadly force. In the near future, forecasters expect storms to hit the Midwest, Texas, and Oklahoma.
