BMX riders want equal access to the new Veterans Park Skate Park
Construction of the Veterans Memorial Park skate park has been progressing throughout the winter. But, BMX riders in the area have posted an online petition asking the Park Authority to allow them to access the skate park as well. Started on Change.org by Evan Valverde, the petition has 456 e-signatures as of publication time and has made its way onto Lake Ridge's Village Skis and Bikes and Ride BMX magazine's Facebook pages. The petition letter says that, "it is a common misconception that BMX bicycles in skateparks create a dangerous environment" and asks the Park Authority to "change the rule at the new Veterans Skate Park to allow bicycles to ride." "Typically skaters scare city leaders into thinking skateboards and bikes can't co-exist. Rules are often created and drafted by those with vested interest in keeping bikes out of the park. Why would they do that? It's simple: It means more park time for them (funded by taxpayers) and none for everyone else. It's genius, really. Bikes don't damage a park any more than skateboards.
