By Whitney Spicer, Capital News Service RICHMOND – Ten members of the Virginia House of Delegates have written a joint letter to the state’s congressional delegation, urging the federal legislators to join in opposing VDOT’s plans to charge tolls on Interstate 95. Delegate John Cox, R-Ashland, one of the delegates who signed the letter, believes that placing tolls on I-95, as the Virginia Department of Transportation has proposed, is not the best option for increasing road revenue. “Tolls are a tax that is imposed disproportionately. In other words, citizens that live the closest to the toll plazas will pay more in road taxes even though many of them may drive less miles than others living farther from the toll plazas,” Cox said, according…

Virginia Department of Transportation reveals new technology to track and redirect snowplows as needed if a big storm hits.
With a $55 million budget, technology allowing for more efficient plowing and a bigger supply of road salt, the Virginia Department of Transportation says it's ready to meet winter head-on. At a briefing about the department's winter preparedness plans Wednesday in Fairfax, Branco Vlacich, VDOT’s Northern Virginia maintenance engineer, said 4,000 trucks would be available to plow snow and keep roads clear this winter — 1,000 more trucks than VDOT had during the harsh winter of 2010. About 2,200 of the 4,000 trucks will be equipped with Automatic Vehicle Locator (AVL) technology, enabling officials to locate plow trucks are and deploy them to the nearest emergency areas. About 97 percent of the trucks have been contracted by VDOT. After the…

If you see a helicopter hovering over the highway, don't be alarmed.
Between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Sunday drivers will see rolling roadblocks and a hovering Dominion Virginia Power helicopter. Traffic will be slow-moving or stopped at points on north and southbound Interstate 95 between Exits 150 and 148 in the Dumfries/Triangle area of Prince William County. "Dominion Virginia Power will be using a helicopter to remove four aerial marker balls attached to overhead utility lines located over I-95 between Exit 150 (Joplin Road) and Exit 148 (Russell Road)," said Virginia Department of Transportation in a release Wednesday. "The rolling roadblock is necessary to protect vehicles in case debris falls onto the roadway while the helicopter removes each marker ball." Dominion Virginia Power spokesperson Le-Ha …

You can find comprehensive travel information via VDOT's 511 service on your phone, the web and now as an app for iOS and Android devices.
Last month, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced that their 511 service is now available for Android phones and tablets and Apple's iPhones and iPads as a free app. The service was previously available via phone calls to the 511 number and on the web at www.511virginia.org. As we all too well know, summertime travel on Virginia roads can be unpredictable. There are of course some known knowns, to paraphrase a former Secretary of Defense, such as I-95 South will be a parking lot every Friday from 2 p.m. onward. But when you encounter stalled traffic on a late evening mid-week as you try to run errands or when you find out too late that there are going to be periodic lane closures on the beltway to accommodate …

People driving on Interstate 95 near Massaponax aren't used to seeing a dead bear in the median, but that's what happened this morning.
A Virginia Department of Transportation contractor removed a black bear carcass from Interstate 95 northbound this morning near Massaponax—a sight that caused quite a scene for motorists who were talking about it on Facebook. Kelly Hannon, a spokeswoman for VDOT, said contractor ICA, which does maintenance work on the interstate for VDOT, found the dead bear on the left shoulder near mile mark 126.4. ICA workers brought the carcass to the Prince William County landfill, Hannon said. "I'm not sure who called it in," she said.
