Woodbridge Varsity Volleyball Falls Short Against Forest Park

The Bruins defeat the Vikings 3-0 in the set; 25-22, 26-24, 25-14

Records: Woodbridge (0-3), Forest Park (3-0); 25-22, 26-24, 25-14 The Heroes: What a thriller! Woodbridge, clearly the taller team, was evenly matched against Forest Park's quicker players. The first two games stayed close throughout (15-15, 23-22), with most of the thanks going to the Vikings's top killers  Valerie Mensah and Azize Hazou, and blockers Kaela Nelson and Rachel Lowther.  Serving skills were even on both sides, close net combat went back-and-forth and both sides had a great percentage of successful kills. As the set labored on, Forest Park became stronger and more efficient in their spikes and passing, which eventually wore down Woodbridge's defensive and offensive capabilities.  The third game heavily favored the Bruins …

Varsity Volleyball: Osbourn Park Decimates Gar-Field

The Yellow Jackets defeat the Indians 3-0 in the set: 25-7, 25-11, 25-7.

Records: Gar-Field (0-3), Osbourn Park (3-0); 25-7, 25-11, 25-7 The Heroes:  The entire Osbourn Park worked as a well-oiled machine and functioned as a calm, cohesive unit. Both the teams' started close (3-3 and 2-1), but OP's Yellow Jackets always found their rhythm first (8-3 and 7-2).  The Indians's Rose-Ellen Mock and Anita Rios failed to falter, and kept their team alive, but it was mostly from the efforts of Kaitlyn Mahoney that the Indians were able to keep their heads in the game. Mahoney didn't miss a single spike, yet could not record all that many kills. The opposing Yellow Jackets just seemed too prepared. Osbourn Park relentlessly dismantled Gar-Field. The Turning Point:  Anita Rios had a few amazing digs that amazed the crowd…

Gar-Field JV Volleyball Dominates Freedom High School

Gar-field defeats Freedom 2-0, scores 25-11, 25-14, respectively.

In their second-to-last home game, the Gar-Field Indians swept the Eagles 2-0. In the first set, Lexi Doresis put Freedom in early trouble with seven consecutive aces, sending a message to the already underdog team. While the Freedom Eagles regained the ball a number of times, they struggled to close the deficit, only going on streaks of two or three.  Solid communication and chemistry, as well as Heidy Frescas' major block at the halfpoint gave Gar-Field the confidence that they were imposing their will on their opponents. The crowd roared in agreement. After Genessis Castillo served up a storm, and helped the team all but grasp the game at 19-7, competition went back and forth, with each team heartedly trading single points; that is, …

New Gym at WSHS Brings More Opportunities for Students

The gym can now host tournaments with improved facilities.

Woodbridge Senior High School has a new gym floor, locker rooms and varsity team for the first time in nearly 20 years. The process of renovating the gym started in late May when contractors began surveying conditions and after county officials made an inspection of the old floor and deemed it unsafe. While the gym was still under construction during the first week of school, WSHS' Activities Director Karl Kerns said it had no affect on the physical education classes held in the gym's facilities. "This new floor was built on top of the existing floor so we need to make some more adjustments before games can be played in here," said Kerns. "Since we built on the floor the basketball hoops are no longer ten-feet-tall and we need to put in …
