Catholics around the world react to the selection: will it impact the church in Woodbridge or elsewhere?
The College of Cardinals at the Vatican in Rome has chosen Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, of Argentina, as the Roman Catholic Church new pope. White smoke rose from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, the traditional signal that the selection has been made, shortly after 2 p.m. today (a little after 7 p.m. in Rome). What are the greatest challenges the new pope will face? What will it mean here in the Woodbridge area? What do you think of the choice? Speak out in the comments below and let us know what you think. According to a New York Times article, Pope Francis was born in Buenos Aires and ordained in the Jesuit order. Bergolgio served as President of the Bishops' Conference of Argentina from November 2005 until November 2011. The name …

Rep. Paul Ryan, Vice President Joe Biden spar in fiery debate, talking economy, abortion, Iran and religion in Thursday night debate.
Vice President Joe Biden and Republican VP candidate U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin faced off Thursday night in a heated debate that covered foreign wars, tax reform, healthcare, abortion, and their shared faith in the Catholic Church. During the debate, broadcast live from Centre College in Danville, Ky., Biden flexed his experience with foreign policy when answering questions about ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, nuclear arms in Iran and whether to send troops to Syria. “The last thing America needs is to get in a ground war in the Middle East,” Biden said. Ryan called the Obama administration’s foreign policy “chaotic,” criticizing the lack of security present during the September attack on the consulate in Benghazi, Libya, …

Which would you prefer to see at Potomac Mills mall?
Wednesday, Potomac Mills mall announced that two new standalone restaurants would be coming to the outlet mall. A third restaurant has yet to be officially announced by mall management, but it has been reported that a Bahama Breeze would also open. The Cheesecake Factory and Bobby’s Burger Palace will start construction later this fall. A reader said he saw fences going up around the proposed location while waiting in a slug line Thursday morning. Two additional stores, The Christmas Tree Shops and buybuy Baby will open in the mall. In Fredericksburg, the same two shops have submitted plans to take up residence in a vacant Shoppers Food and Pharmacy building in Central Park. Last February, the mall closed 750 parking spaces in anticipation…

What are your thoughts on the lower tax rate that could be adopted on April 24?
The Prince William Board of County Supervisors held a non-binding straw vote on Tuesday concerning a $1.209 tax rate per $100 of assessed property value, effectively nixing the previously advertised $1.215 tax rate. During the April 10 Board of County Supervisors work session on the county school budget, Chairman Corey Stewart explained to Prince William County Schools Chairman At-Large Milton Johns that the board explored the possibility of a flat tax bill adjusted for inflation ($1.212) or a revenue neutral rate ($1.209). The lower tax rate means the school board would have to revisit its FY 2013 budget and make further cuts in school services. The Prince William County School Board voted March 28 to pass the proposed $861 million …

NASA is looking to trade in shuttles for an Apollo-like space exploration vehicle with a $38 billion price tag.
With Discovery safely on the ground at the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center and retired after 28-years, the question is: What will NASA do next? According to NASA, they are designing and building a new space vehicle that will have the capabilities to send people into space to explore the solar system. The goal is to develop a vehicle that will one day land humans on Mars, according to NASA. The new space exploration vehicle, “Orion,” will be able to carry astronauts into space for 21-day missions, according to NASA. The new space vehicle would cost about $38 billion and only fly twice within the next 10-years, the Los Angeles Times reported in 2011. The L.A. Times also reported the multi-billion dollar price tag would also pay for a new …

Hundreds protest both sides Tuesday outside the Supreme Court.
Hundreds of people gathered outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday to protest for and against President Obama’s health care reform. The high court is hearing arguments for the second of the three-day hearing. The case, according to the Washington Post, largely rests on the constitutionality of a provision that originated deep in Republican circles. "As Americans we all deserve affordable health care," said Allan Jordan, of Piscataway, N.J., outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday. "Health care is too high, and not everyone has the funds to pay for it. That's not right." The justices started zeroing in on whether Congress had the power to require most people in the U.S. to buy medical insurance, according to Reuters. The wire service also …

The Supreme Court will hear arguments this fall that could change the way colleges and universities use affirmative action to accept students.
Several competitive colleges and universities in Virginia use affirmative action to help diversify their campuses. But that practice could change if the Supreme Court chooses to overturn the decades-old policy. Last week, the court announced it will hear the controversial Fisher v. University of Texas case in its upcoming fall session. The case's plaintiff Abigail Noel Fisher says she was "unconstitutionally denied admission to the school because she is white," according to The Huffington Post. In a Patch article, University of Virginia law professor Tomiko Brown-Nagin says data from California suggests campuses could become less diverse if affirmative action is overturned. On the other hand, demographer Qian Tsai says the general …

Seven Northern Virginia churches are still battling their former diocese in court.
The Episcopal Church is the last place local church members want their money to go. Some even went so far as to "opt out" of giving to the denomination, choosing instead that their donations be spent inside their own churches. But thanks to a recent ruling by a Fairfax County Circuit Court judge, Truro Church, The Falls Church and five other congregations stand to lose a good portion of their donations to the denomination and diocese they divorced years ago. Everything the congregations acquired before Jan. 31, 2007, the date Judge Randy Bellows notes as the official separation from The Episcopal Church, must be forfeited to the denomination and diocese. The congregations must also surrender the churches and other property they've …

BUT, will they come into the 21st century??????? Respect women and treat them equally, turn in pedophiles and their enablers for secular justice rather then hideing them, stop wasting hundreds of millions of dollars on stock piling material crap, admit they are wrong concerning the LBGT community (they are born that way not by choice) and accept the pill. I doubt it due to the ayatollahs that …   more ›
