New Dog Park Named After Fallen Prince William County Police Canine

K-9 Gunner, a 7-year-old German Shepherd, was killed by friendly fire in June 2005.

The new dog park in Woodbridge has a new name, dedicated to the memory of a little-known Prince William County hero: a faithful canine named Gunner.

The Board of County Supervisors this week approved a new name for the park at 13000 Minnieville Road: "K-9 Gunner Memorial Park." The 7-year-old German Shepherd, a highly-decorated drug detection and police canine, was struck by friendly fire on June 6, 2005, as he helped officers find a suspect in the Woodbridge area.

The dog park, which opened to the public in May, is the second to open in Prince William County over the last year. Community volunteers held fundraisers to fence the land and get it ready before it opened. The park is open daily and closes at sunset.
